Periods 1, 2, 3 & 4  - Work through Thursday was assigned: work on "Dissect a Poem" worksheet - defining figurative language, forms of poetry and poetic conventions and applying knowledge to worksheet; complete chapter 5 Of Mice and Men by Friday; read "On Summer" in the Language of Literature book and answer questions on page FCAT 23;  go on FREERICE.com and do 10-15 minutes worth of vocabulary then print screen and bring in as proof you did this (there should be rice in the bowl)

We started the period introducing 2 new students to the class.  Then we started reading 'Most Dangerous Game'. We began with a discussion about the picture and what the title might mean and moved into discussions about extreme sports and hunting. We continued by reading 1/2 of the first page.

The students finished watching the movie "Devil's Arithmetic" and spent the last half of class rewriting their movie guide answers into complete sentences.

Today the students did some more grammar practice and as a paired activity the students completed the Literary Analysis on page 841. The assignment required 3 examples of figurative language from the poem, completing  the Paired Activity where the student creates their own simile and metaphor to go with the poem, and one example each of alliteration, assonance, and consonance.

Today the students completed a grammar practice. The read "Like The Sun" on pages 849-52 individually and then completed as a paired activity the Literary Analysis on page 853. The requirements for the analysis were to answer the humor question and make sure to cite examples from the story to back up opinion. Respond to questions #7 Critic's Corner and answer the following question about the painting on page 852 - "How is the painting related to Shekar's ideas about truth?"

Today we reviewed pronouns (subject/object/possesive). We then discussed due dates for various assigments through the next two weeks (see below in HW). We proceeded to have a class discussion of our novel thru section 3 and began reading section 4 .

We began our class discussing what happend at the end of Chapter 2. When it became apparent that only 2 students had read for HW, the students were put into groups. One group had read so they moved onto filling out our If I Should Die Worksheet. As each group completed their reading they moved onto the worksheet.

We started off our class by writing a free write journal and several students shared theirs with the class. Then for extra credit some students read  their Holocaust poems to the class. We began reading chapter 1 of our novel If I Should Die Before I Wake.

I collected their Holocaust poems. The students responded to a Journal and shared; we discussed how to elaborate on what they wrote. Then we talked about "What is a Neo-nazi?". The students impressed me with their knowledge. Next, I handed out their new novel If I Should Die Before I Wake. We looked at the front cover graphics and talked about what we saw and what it might mean. Then I gave the students a summary of what the novel was about.

We reviewed all types of Nouns - proper/common, abstract/concrete,compound, collective, possesive. Then we continued our reading and discussion of Chapter 1 of Night. I explained they will be having a noun quiz next week and they may use the notes they took in class last week.

Today the students took a Noun Quiz. Then I handed back their first Mock FCAT Essay's and we discussed them in generalities. Today we completed reading "The Perfect Storm' individually. Then the students completed the vocab in action exercise A & B. We reviewed their answers in class.

We have finished our presentations in Periods 1 & 2, with a few left in Periods 3 & 4. We responded to our Journal and we had extra time so several students shared their journals. We discussed how they felt about the death penalty and an eye for an eye. This turned into a large class discussion  and we will be following up on this in the next coming weeks; as it relates to our Novel.

We took our SAT vocabulary test today and responded to our Journal. We had extra time so several students shared their journals. We discussed why bad things happen to good people and this turned into a large class discussion on how they felt about the death penalty and an eye for an eye. Today we continued to review our SAT vocabulary and we created acrostic poems with our names. In groups we read stories of survivors and non-survivors from the Holocaust history museaum website. Then we created a class poem using words that came from our readings.

As an Intro to our 1st Novel, the students, working in groups, created their own KWL charts listing what they Know about the Holocaust and what they Want to know. We will begin our novel next week, and at the completion of this unit we will revisit these charts and complete what I Learned and then each group will present their charts.

Today was "Free Write Friday". This is where the students write about the topic of their choice. They usually enjoy Friday's journals since they can write about what's on their mind. We completed reviewing SAT vocabulary - List #. We completed our day with written answers to comprehension questions about the Night Preface, this was assigned reading earlier in the week and a class discussion yesterday.

Today was "Free Write Friday". This is where the students write about the topic of their choice. They usually enjoy Friday's journals since they can write about what's on their mind. We continued reviewing SAT vocabulary - List #2, and several more students presented their Quilt project. All students should have turned in their Alice Walker Unit work today for a grade. No Unit work = a grade of zero, no late work will be accepted. We completed our day with a discussion about the Night Preface reading assigned earlier in the week.

Today we continued with Springboard activity 1.7 (stories Eleven, Oranges, and Spotlight). We worked in groups and discussed the stories diction, syntax, imagery, etc.

Today the students worked on identifying proper and common nouns. We also worked on identifying common nouns that were capitalized that should have been lowercase, and proper nouns that were lowercase that should have been capitalized. Then we discuss the Preface to Night.

Today we did our first energy writing and reviewed SAT vocabulary word #8. Several students shared their journals. The students got into groups and continued working on the Springboard story "Eleven". Using the chart on page #118 they identified diction, syntax, imagery and made inferences.

Today we did some energy writing and reviewed SAT vocabulary words 7 & 8. Several students shared their journals. We discussed upcoming testing dates, I explained about the PSAT. The students began reading the Preface to Night.

Today we did some energy writing and reviewed a list of new SAT vocabulary words (berate, carp, castigate, censure, chastise, deprecate, deride, impugn, rebuff, rebuke, reprove, upbraid). Several students shared their journals. We discussed upcoming testing dates, and the PSAT, National Merit Scholarship, and college entrance exams. The students reviewed their Alice Walker Unit work; this work is due on Friday 9/13.

We discussed corrections for our Bio-poems. The students have a chance to make the corrections as we discussed and turn in an update poem on Monday 9/9 for an improved grade. Then we continued breaking down into understandable chunks "The Wreck of the Hesperus". When we were finished discussing the poem the class said they enjoyed it very much.

Today we collected the Commonly Confused HW assigned yesterday.Then the students read a poem in class "The Wreck of the Hesperus" and took a pre-test. The students found the poem a little difficult to understand. When they were done with their pre-test, we began to break down the poem into understandable chunks. We will continue this on Friday.

We began our day with a discussion on "What does it mean to come of age?'. This led to a class read aloud of 5 vignettes that made up a story called "Cut". We took notes and made comments and observations on each vignette. This is part of Springboard Activity 1.8.

We began class by discussing background information and looking at some art work about our upcoming story. Then we read as a class "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker.

We completed Grammar in Context on page 515 and review active voice/passive voice. Then the class divided up into pairs to work on identifying 5 conflicts within "Everyday Use" and answering the question Was the conflict resolved? Why or why not?. Then we discussed our upcoming project "My Piece of the Quilt".

We began our day with SAT vocabulary and the students then wrote a Journal about their name. A few srtudents shared their Journal. This led into a class read aloud of two stories about "What's in a name?". The students were shown how to take T-chart notes through modeling the exercise. They then completed the chart and turned it in for a grade. Continuing with our Heritage Unit, we completed Vocabulary in Action on page 515 and started  discussing background information and looking at some art work about the story. Then we read as a class "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker.

English 1

We reviewed vocabulary and had a lively class discussion about "What's in a name? Would we be the same person if our mother/father named us something different?".

We began looking at SB activity 1.3 Pizza. This exercise works on diction, syntax, imagery, tone, and voice.

HW:
1) Completed and typed Bio-Poem with illustrations was due in class today.
2) Bring in Language of Literature books on Tuesday 8/27/13. I did not receive 9th grade books, so for now bring your books to class.
3)Complete SB Activity 1.3 if not completed in class. Due Tuesday 8/27/13.

English 2

The class reviewed vocabulary and then we brainstormed whole class "Who do we admire?" and "What are traits do we admire?". We read "Alice Walker - Author Study" together as a class.

Period 6 only - The students were shown how to take T-chart notes through modeling the exercise.

HW:
1) Period 6 only - Complete Alice Walker T-chart  Due Wednesday 8/28.
2) Period 7 - No HW.

English 2 Honors

Students responded to Journal #3, a few students shared their Journal's and we reviewed vocabulary. Then we brainstormed in class "Who do we admire?" and "What are traits do we admire?". We read "Alice Walker - Author Study" together as a class. The students were shown how to take T-chart notes through modeling the exercise. We also discussed creating a vocabulary chart for the 5 words to know for the next story we are going to read "Everyday Use".

English 1

Today we discussed "What is a noun" and then the students were given an exercise where they had to identify all nouns in a sentence. Volunteers came up to the front of the room and underlined the nouns. Whole class discussion followed on the accuracy of the answers.

The students viewed the first episode of Aftershock - our school TV.


HW:
1) Completed and typed Bio-Poem with illustrations due in class on Monday 8/26/13. Please don't forget to include illustrations. They count towards your overall grade.

This post is for FRIDAY AUGUST 23, 2013 - I apologize for it being late; technical difficulties.

The students completed the SB activity 2.17 chunking exercise and we discussed our answers in class.We moved on to the second half of SB activity 2.17 reading the second story. We then completed SB activity 2.17 with a Venn Diagram comparing the stories we read.

DO NOT BRING IN YOUR LANGUAGE OF LITERATURE BOOKS. I received a class set late in the day Friday.

The students were introduced to SOAPStone which is an AP close reading strategy. We utilized this strategy as we continued working on the second half of SB activity 2.17. We concluded SB activity 2.17 with a Venn Diagram comparing the stories we read.
